How to Check Oil in Your Car
If you don’t know how to check the oil in your car, there’s no better time than the present to learn. While you can count on LaFontaine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (CDJR) of Fenton to change your oil, you can quickly give it a once-over yourself. This ensures that your car runs well near Fenton, Brighton, and Howell, Michigan, before your oil change.
The Steps for Checking the Oil
The oil moves through the engine and associated parts to lubricate them. Your car will perform well and provide a smoother ride with this type of lubrication. To ensure that it stays that way, adhere to the oil change schedule and use these steps to check your car’s oil.
Park Your Car
Make sure that you’ve parked your car on level ground and turn the engine off. Keep your car in Park and put on the parking brake. Then lift the hood.
Find the Dipstick
Finding the dipstick will be simple. Look for a yellow or orange handle. The handle also will be marked with an oil can, so that you know you’ve found the right item.
Pull Out the Dipstick
Pull the dipstick out of the tube. Use an old rag or towel to wipe off the excess oil from the dipstick. The dipstick shows two different lines. The upper line indicates that your car has enough oil while the lower one shows that you’re a quart too low. Depending on your car, the words “full” or “add” may be listed on the dipstick.
Put Back the Dipstick
Now you’ll want to put the dipstick back into the tube and extract it from the tube.
Step 5:
What to Look for When You Extract the Dipstick
When you take the dipstick out, carefully examine it. You’ll want to check out where the line of oil lies. It should be either at the full line or in between the full and add lines.
You should also look at the oil’s condition. Is it gold, transparent, and flowing like honey? Or is it dark, sludgy, and moving slowly?
New oil should be the former while older oil will be the consistency of what’s detailed in the latter. After driving for miles, your car picks up all kinds of dirt and debris. The oil absorbs all this matter and eventually must be changed along with the filter. Dirty oil cannot effectively move through the engine and its parts, leading to less-than-ideal performance.
